Crayfish invading Europe: the case study of Procambarus clarkii   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The red swamp crayfish, Procambarus clarkii, native to northeastern Mexico and southcentral USA, is today the dominant macroinvertebrate in several European countries. While the first introduction of this species into Spain is well-documented, little is known about its pathways of invasion and the reason for its rapid spread in several European countries. Study of the biology of the species has revealed a number of properties that makes this crayfish a successful invader. Procambarus clarkii exhibits properties characteristic of an r-selected species, including early maturity at small body size, rapid growth rates, large numbers of offspring at a given parental size, and relatively short life spans. It is also plastic in its life cycle, able to disperse widely in the habitat and to tolerate environmental extremes. It displays generalist and opportunistic feeding habits, consuming macrophytes and preying on amphibians. Procambarus clarkii can also replace indigenous crayfish by a combination of mechanisms, including competitive exclusion and transmission of the fungus-like Aphanomyces astaci, responsible for the crayfish plague. Finally, this species shows a wide behavioral flexibility when coping with new types of predators. The results of these studies, combined with the increasing information available in the scientific literature on this and other crayfish species, will help us understand invasions in this taxon and make predictions about the identity of future crayfish invaders.  相似文献

There is a paucity of research on intra-specific morphological and genetic diversity in Australian arid-zone reptiles, and a number of Australian reptile species have for many years been regarded as "species complexes" that classical morphological analyses could not resolve. We conducted a phylogenetic and phylogeographic study of a widespread species group of Australian geckonid lizards to address two main aims. First, based on a large mitochondrial and nuclear gene data set, we have generated the first molecular phylogeny for the Diplodactylus stenodactylus species group (D. alboguttatus, D. damaeus, D. maini, and D. squarrosus, D. stenodactylus) and multiple outgroups to examine the evolutionary relationships among these arid-zone species and phylogenetic patterns within some species. The edited alignment of 41 individuals comprises 2485 characters (1163 ND2+tRNAs; 490 16s; 832 RAG-1), and of these 717 (29%) were variable and parsimony informative (568 ND2+tRNAs; 89 16s; 60 RAG-1). This broad-scale, multi-gene phylogeny has supported previous conjectures on the higher-level phylogenetic relationships among members of the D. stenodactylus species-group based on morphology, but also has uncovered hidden diversity within the group with two new species identified. Analysis at this broad level has identified patterns associated with the distribution of the D. stenodactylus species group that appear to be influenced by environmental processes operating at large geographic scales. Two major clades within the species group were associated with broad differences in habitat types, with one group largely restricted to the temperate zone of the Southwest Province and another largely restricted to central and northern Western Australia north of Kalgoorlie, in line with the Eremaean Province of the Eremaean Zone and the Northern Province of the Tropical Zone. Second, we have assembled phylogeographic data based on a mitochondrial gene (ND2+tRNAs) for five species (Rhynchoedura ornata, Diplodactylus maini, D. pulcher, D. squarrosus, D. stenodactylus) where larger sampling is available, with particular focus on D. stenodactylus, which is distributed both in the iconic but little-known Pilbara area of endemism in north-western Australia as well as in other parts of the Australian arid zone. The edited alignment of 95 individuals comprises 1142 characters and of these 601 (53%) are variable and parsimony informative. We found significant intra-specific genetic variation in all five species, highlighting the need for large-scale screening of cryptic species, with sampling specifically targeted at determining the geographic limits of such taxa. In particular, within D. stenodactylus, a deep and ancient phylogenetic split distinguishes populations in the Pilbara region from non-Pilbara populations. This split may be the result of broad differences in underlying geological substrate, with the Pilbara clade generally preferring harder soils and the non-Pilbara clade adapted to sand.  相似文献

The burbot, Lota lota, is the only freshwater species of the codfish family and has a Holarctic distribution. Pleistocene glaciations caused significant geographical differentiation in the past, but its life history characterized by winter spawning migrations over large distances is likely to homogenize populations by contemporary gene flow. We investigated the population genetic structure of 541 burbots from Lake Constance and adjacent Rhine and Danube tributaries in Europe using the entire mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region and 11 microsatellites. Microsatellites revealed considerable population divergence (F(ST) = 0.26) and evidenced recent bottlenecks in two Central European rivers. In accordance to previous evidence two main phylogeographic lineages (Atlantic and Danubian) were found co-occurring at similar frequencies in Lake Constance, where they currently undergo random mating as indicated by microsatellites. The Danubian lineage contributed only a small proportion to the lake's mtDNA diversity, and probably expanded within the lake shortly after its formation approximately 10,000-15,000 BP. The larger Atlantic haplotype diversity suggested a population expansion older than the lake itself. Levels of admixture at microsatellite loci were less obvious due to their high variability, and coalescence methods were used to estimate past admixture proportions. Our results reinforce a model of a two-step colonization of Europe by burbot from an ancestral Danubian refuge, and confirm the persistence of a secondary Atlantic refuge, as proposed to exist for other freshwater fish. We conclude that the present-day burbot population in Lake Constance bears the genetic signature of both contemporary gene flow and historical separation events.  相似文献

1. We explored differential population responses to climate in 18 populations of threatened spring-summer Chinook salmon Onchorynchus tshawytscha in the Salmon River basin, Idaho. 2. Using data from a long-term mark-release-recapture study of juvenile survival, we found that fall stream flow is the best predictor of average survival across all populations. 3. To determine whether all populations responded similarly to climate, we used a cluster analysis to group populations that had similar annual fluctuations in survival. The populations grouped into four clusters, and different environmental factors were important for different clusters. 4. Survival in two of the clusters was negatively correlated with summer temperature, and survival in the other two clusters was positively correlated with minimum fall stream flow, which in turn depends on snow pack from the previous winter. 5. Using classification and regression tree analysis, we identified stream width and stream temperature as key habitat factors that shape the responses of individual populations to climate. 6. Climate change will likely have different impacts on different populations within this metapopulation, and recognizing this diversity is important for accurately assessing risks.  相似文献

1. Biological invasions are widely recognised as a significant component of human‐caused environmental change and a primary threat to native biodiversity. The negative impacts of species invasions are particularly evident for freshwater crayfish faunas. 2. This study provides novel insight into the ecological effects of native and non‐native crayfish on zoobenthic communities (with emphasis on the non‐native rusty crayfish, Orconectes rusticus) across broad scales by combining a meta‐analysis of small‐scale experimental studies with a long‐term observational study conducted over a 24 year period in Sparkling Lake, Wisconsin, U.S.A. (46°00′N, 89°42′W). 3. The meta‐analysis summarised quantitatively the results of cage experiments for seven species of crayfish spanning four continents. We found that total zoobenthos densities (primarily Gastropoda and Diptera) were significantly lower in treatments containing crayfish relative to controls; a result that was significant for non‐native crayfish but not for crayfish in their native range, perhaps owing to a small sample size. In contrast to other species, rusty crayfish were also negatively associated with Ephemeroptera. 4. Results from the time series analysis comparing temporal trends in rusty crayfish and invertebrate abundances from Sparkling Lake were consistent with the findings from the meta‐analysis. Rusty crayfish were negatively correlated with the abundance of total zoobenthos, Diptera, Ephemeroptera and Odonata, as well as families of Trichoptera. 5. By coupling the results from short and long‐term research, our study offers greater insight into the nature of crayfish‐invertebrate interactions in aquatic systems, revealing consistent effects of invasive crayfish on native fauna. The control and management of invasive species is facilitated by the knowledge that well executed small‐scale studies may be extrapolated to understand larger‐scale ecological interactions.  相似文献

A multidisciplinary study was made of brown trout Salmo trutta in the Borne River, a typical fast-flowing mountain stream in the Northern French Alps, in the geographical range of the Mediterranean lineages (ML). Information on (1) the proportion of stocked fluoro-marked fish in the angling harvest, (2) the introgression of introduced DNA microsatellite alleles into the native gene pool and (3) the demography of the population in situ in autumn revealed two contrasting populations separated by a physical barrier to upstream migration. A native S. trutta population ( c . 10 000 adults) lives downstream of the barrier and is characterized by a large frequency of ML alleles (82–97%) and high densities (43–55 fish 100 m−2). This population is maintained predominantly by natural recruitment of juveniles (51–82%). In contrast, the upstream population is characterized by a large frequency of Atlantic lineage (AL) alleles (78–100%) and low densities (1–2 fish 100 m−2) and appears to be maintained by restocking (90–100%). The origins of these sharply contrasting populations appear to reflect isolation by an impassable barrier, catastrophic flooding, a downstream gradient in water quality, stocking and fishing pressure. The native downstream population has been resilient to large sudden floods and to intensive stockings of domesticated AL fish. The results of this study justify a shift in management towards conservation and rehabilitation of the native population.  相似文献

Although fitness typically increases with body size and selection gradients on size are generally positive, much of this information comes from terrestrial taxa. In the early life history of fish, there is evidence of selection both for and against larger size, leaving open the question of whether the general pattern for terrestrial taxa is valid for fish. We reviewed studies of size‐dependent survival in the early life history of fish and obtained estimates of standardized selection differentials from 40 studies. We found that 77% of estimated selection differentials favored larger size and that the strength of selection was more than five times that seen in terrestrial taxa. Selection decreased with study period duration and initial length, and disruptive selection occurred significantly more frequently than stabilizing selection. Contrary to expectations from Bergmann's rule, selection on size did not increase with latitude.  相似文献

Natural selection leads to behavioural choices that increase the animal''s fitness. The neuronal mechanisms underlying behavioural choice are still elusive and empirical evidence connecting neural circuit activation to adaptive behavioural output is sparse.We exposed foraging juvenile crayfish to approaching shadows of different velocities and found that slow-moving shadows predominantly activated a pair of giant interneurons, which mediate tail-flips that thrust the animals backwards and away from the approaching threat. Tail-flips also moved the animals farther away from an expected food source, and crayfish defaulted to freezing behaviour when faced with fast-approaching shadows. Under these conditions, tail-flipping, an ineffective and costly escape strategy was suppressed in favour of freezing, a more beneficial choice. The decision to freeze also dominated in the presence of a more desirable resource; however, the increased incentive was less effective in suppressing tail-flipping when paired with slow-moving visual stimuli that reliably evoked tail-flips in most animals. Together this suggests that crayfish make value-based decisions by weighing the costs and benefits of different behavioural options, and they select adaptive behavioural output based on the activation patterns of identifiable neural circuits.  相似文献

遥感技术已成为湿地植被识别和分类的重要手段,而深入研究地面植物群落光谱特征对于利用遥感影像的湿地植被分类具有指导意义。以典型淡水湿地——野鸭湖湿地为实验区,测定其典型湿地植物群落的反射光谱,并重采样以模拟OMIS机载成像光谱仪红-近红外的50个波段。在此基础上应用二阶导数的方法得到湿地植物识别的9个最佳波段:515.3,553.1,626.5,687.5,733.9,810.6,821.1,833.0,966.8nm。这些波段可以很好的识别湿地植物类型:沉水植物在810.6,821.1,833.0nm存在独特的吸收/反射特征,与其他湿地植物类型相区别。浮水、挺水、湿生、中生植物相比,浮水植物在515.3nm的吸收特征和553.1nm的反射特征较为突出;浮水、湿生、中生植物在687.5nm的吸收特征与挺水植物相比更为显著,但挺水植物在733.9nm的反射特征尤为明显;湿生植物在626.5nm的吸收特征比浮水、挺水、中生植物更加显著;中生植物缺少在626.5nm的吸收特征,但在966.8nm的吸收特征最为明显。研究成果不仅可以为野鸭湖湿地植被的高光谱遥感数据处理及湿地植被制图提供一定的科学依据,而且可以为淡水湿地植被的遥感识别和分类提供一定的参考、借鉴。  相似文献
